About Alan
Alan Smith is Midwest Director with some oversight over R Street operations from Kentucky to the Dakotas. He has been a registered lobbyist in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, New York, North Carolina, Virginia, Colorado and West Virginia. He has worked or testified on legislation in every state capitol but two and in the U.S. Congress. Along with his state team colleagues, Alan’s duties include authoring op-eds and policy studies, testifying before state and municipal legislative bodies, and representing R Street as a commentator and coalition member to promote free-market solutions.
Alan was a co-founder of R Street and before that was Executive Director and board member of the American Legislative Exchange Council. He also served as a long-time board member and former president of the State Government Affairs Council and on the board of editors of Public Integrity, the publication of the ethics section of the American Society for Public Administration.
Alan served in the federal government as a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation following graduation from the Moritz School of Law at the Ohio State University; then in state government as head of the enforcement section of the Ohio Division of Securities and chief counsel to the minority in the Ohio House of Representatives. He has authored articles published by The Hill, Insurance Journal, The Columbus Dispatch, The Cincinnati Enquirer, and Indianapolis Business Journal. He has appeared on public policy shows on radio in Columbus and television in Pittsburgh and Harrisburg.
He lives in Columbus, Ohio with his wife.
