Overview

American elections are highly decentralized across the 50 states, resulting in a wide variety of approaches to all aspects of election policy and administration. From primary election structures to political speech protections in the age of artificial intelligence (AI), these different approaches reflect policy trade-offs that impact how Americans experience the democratic process.

In July, the R Street Institute published a 50-state scorecard that evaluated each state on 21 distinct aspects of their election policies through the lens of access, security, and trustworthiness. While there are no one-size-fits-all solutions to designing an election system worthy of public trust, this webinar will explore how states are currently handling three specific policy areas that are foundational to free and fair elections:

  • Access to the primary election ballot
  • Political speech protections in the age of AI
  • Election safety and security preparations

Join our panel of experts for a discussion about what states are doing in each of these policy areas as well as best practices and practical considerations for policymakers moving forward.
