R Street believes in a society that is free, inclusive and just. As such, we stay out of politics as an institution, but stand staunchly for democracy.

President Trump’s claims that the election was stolen from him are false. His repeated attacks on our electoral system and the dedicated public servants who administer it are wrong. And, his direct invocations of violence are dangerous. Such actions tear at the fabric of liberal democratic governance.

Although R Street cannot take part in electoral matters, does not take positions on nominations and weighs-in only selectively on legislation, today’s events transcend the political and require us to speak up. It is clear that the president incited these riots and violence. He must now act decisively to stop them.

For our part, we will do everything we can to keep our staff safe, while our work continues on every topic. But, all of that work presumes a State that can solve problems through civil debate and democratic decision-making. It also assumes a government that has the peaceful transfer of power as its bedrock. Our nation will not endure if today’s events continue.

Congress must certify the results of the 2020 election and the country must move forward.
