In the News Reforms at the WTO: Beyond Archaic Binaries
When the next round of negotiations begin, India will finally have an opportunity to raise its own issues as well. Based on the concerns of the Trump Administration and establishment Republicans, the new discussions will centre around three key issues:[23]
- The designation of countries as “Developing Countries” and the benefits associated with such categorisation;
- The structure of the Dispute Resolution System of the WTO and its capacity to provide quick and effective remedies; and,
- Expansion of the understanding of “market access” to encompass structural and extra-legal barriers to entry such as intellectual property (IP) theft, unwritten norms on compulsory domestic partnership requirements, and governmental vendetta.
