Dan Lawton’s Letter to Alan Dowty
I was not one of Alan’s distinguished students who went on to do great things. But he produced a good many – Cynthia Watson, who was one of his TAs, and my friend Jim Baker, who later became the general counsel of the FBI. The one thing we all had in common was Alan. He took an interest in us, cared about us, propelled our careers forward. His career as a writer and researcher was never more important than his teaching of young people, or so it seemed to us.
