Alan Smith is Midwest director and senior fellow with the R Street Institute, where he leads R Street efforts in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky.

He also maintains legislative contacts around the states and supports R Street initiatives within the American Legislative Exchange Council and the National Conference of Insurance Legislators.

Alan cofounded R Street in June 2012, having previously served as a senior fellow at the Heartland Institute, working on insurance issues. Alan also has served as executive director of ALEC and the Zoological Association of America.

Earlier in his career, he was an associate vice president of government relations at Nationwide Insurance and Ohio Casualty Group and minority counsel to the Ohio House of Representatives. Alan also served a three-year term on Board of Editors of Public Integrity, a publication of the ethics section of the American Society for Public Administration.

In Ohio, Smith investigated securities fraud as head of the enforcement section of the Ohio Division of Securities. He served as special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1969-1974, mostly investigating violations of federal criminal law in New York City and New York State.

Smith earned a bachelor of arts in politics and government from Ohio Wesleyan University and a law degree from Ohio State University College of Law.

He lives in Columbus, Ohio, with his wife, Angelique. He has a son, Cameron, and a daughter, Regina.
