Alan Smith leads R Street’s efforts in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky. He also maintains legislative contacts around the states and supports R Street initiatives within the American Legislative Exchange Council and the National Conference of Insurance Legislators.

Alan co-founded R Street in June 2012, having previously served as a senior fellow at the Heartland Institute, working on insurance issues. Alan also has served as executive director of ALEC and the Zoological Association of America. Earlier in his career, he was an associate vice president of government relations at Nationwide Insurance and Ohio Casualty Group and minority counsel to the Ohio House of Representatives. Alan also served on the Board of Editors of Public Integrity, a publication of the ethics section of the American Society for Public Administration.

Smith earned a bachelor of arts in politics and government from Ohio Wesleyan University and a juris doctor from Ohio State University College of Law.

He lives in Columbus, Ohio with his wife, Angelique and has a son, Cameron; and a daughter, Regina.
