About Lars
Lars Trautman was a resident senior fellow of criminal justice and civil liberties policy. He researched, wrote, and spoke primarily on alternatives to arrest, prosecution, and pretrial and jail policies. His work has appeared in a wide variety of publications, including Slate, The Guardian, National Review, National Affairs, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. In addition, he consulted with legislators, prosecuting attorneys, and other policymakers and criminal justice practitioners, sharing new policy developments and advising them on best practices in the criminal justice system.
Lars joined R Street after working as counsel for the Homeland Security Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. Earlier in his career, he served as an assistant district attorney in Essex County, Massachusetts.
Lars received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Johns Hopkins University, his master’s in politics and international studies from Uppsala University and his JD from the University of Virginia School of Law.
He lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife and daughter.
