Finance and philosophy: Why we are always surprised
In his new book, “Finance and Philosophy: Why We’re Always Surprised” (Paul Dry Books, 2018), Alex Pollock combines ideas and history in instructive, provocative, and entertaining ways. The adventures of financial markets turn out to be philosophically intriguing and paradoxical. Mr. Pollock explores, for example, why uncertainty can never be eliminated from financial behavior, no matter how much effort is expended; why smart people make such big mistakes; the nature of money; why economics can never be a science; why bubbles are so deliciously tempting; and what the most dangerous financial institution in the world is.
