In September, the R Street Institute released a report offering points of consensus and propositions for further consideration to a global community in the midst of substantial changes to both private and public policy for online platforms. The next month witnessed the launch of the Integrity Institute, an independent nonprofit focused on building a community of practitioners and researchers with the shared goal of improving online integrity. These efforts reflect a broad and diverse field of advocacy, analysis and research working in parallel to conversations in national and regional governments regarding potential changes to legal and regulatory frameworks governing internet companies and services.

This event will bring together government representatives and non-governmental stakeholders to discuss content policy and governance. Discussions will focus less on particular industry practices or prospective regulations and more on the structural and procedural conditions that can help facilitate the effective collaborations that lead to sustained improvements. In practice, internet governance is a complex system with outcomes determined by interactions among markets, governments, users and non-governmental organizations. As more and more of these levers bend toward complementary goals of increasing online platform safety and accountability, shared conversations such as this will offer ever greater value by facilitating constructive dialogue and partnership.

This event is a collaboration between the R Street Institute, with Senior Fellow for Internet Governance Chris Riley serving as the lead, and the Integrity Institute, including its cofounders Sahar Massachi and Jeff Allen and Integrity Institute Fellow Katie Harbath.
