New chance in approach to smoking
Writing for InsideSources.com, David Bahr, a policy analyst with the R Street Institute, a conservative and libertarian think tank based in Washington, offers hope for change that could reduce cigarette smoking and the smoking-related illnesses that cause nearly 500,000 deaths a year and $300 billion in medical costs annually.
He calls for the Trump administration to reverse “perhaps well-intentioned but ultimately misguided Obama-era policies.” The key is to embrace a harm-reduction approach.
“Tobacco harm reduction recognizes that some folks find quitting their addiction to nicotine nearly impossible. E-cigarettes offer a popular way to satisfy those cravings that is much safer than traditional combustible cigarettes,” Bahr says.
