“President Biden’s announced executive action on cannabis could significantly help untangle the messy dual legality of the drug between the federal government and states. We encourage his administration to work with champions of legalization and record expungement in Congress on both sides of the aisle, like Reps. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), Dave Joyce (R-Ohio), and Lisa Blunt-Rochester (D-Del.), to give even more momentum to this issue in a way that protects public safety and advances justice.

“As our research into the potential link between cannabis legalization and public safety  indicates, appropriate federal legalization of cannabis can reduce illicit markets and associated violence, as well as increase police legitimacy and improve police-community relationships. It will also enable law enforcement to focus on increases in homicides seen over the last few years to better protect public safety, instead of enforcing outdated laws.”

R Street’s Criminal Justice and Civil Liberties Program recently released a report about links between marijuana legalization and improving public safety. Read the report here.
