About Tony

Tony Mills directed R Street’s science policy program, which aimed to equip policymakers, especially Congress, with more and better scientific expertise and to advance public policies that stimulate scientific innovation. He researched and wrote about a range of topics including science, technology, philosophy, and the role of expertise in governance.

Tony’s writings have appeared in such publications as Slate, Politico, National Affairs, City Journal, Issues in Science & Technology, The New Atlantis, and various peer-reviewed journals. A senior fellow at Pepperdine University’s School of Public Policy and a scholar associate of the Society of Catholic Scientists, he is currently writing a book about scientific expertise in the age of populism.

Prior to his arrival at R Street, Tony was managing editor of RealClear Media Group and editor of RealClearPolicy. He has worked for numerous publications, including The New Atlantis, Big Questions Online and several academic publications, and has held positions at Williams & Jensen, the Manhattan Institute and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

Tony received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, French and comparative literature from Northwestern University, where he also completed master’s work in French. He holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Notre Dame, with a focus on philosophy of science.

He lives in Chevy Chase, Maryland, with his wife and two sons.
