Being prepared for the storms ahead is key to avoid future disaster.

“If we had a better long-term view of potential weather conditions, system preparedness and grid resiliency would improve,” says Beth Garza, a senior fellow at the R Street Institute.

Also addressed during the meeting, half of the outages that occurred at power plants were due to the lack of fuel delivered at sufficient volumes and pressures.

Garza says that energy needs during last month’s storm were based on information gathered from 2011’s winter storm, which was where we fell short because this storm was much more severe.
