Trade Reps Urge Congress to Renew NFIP Before Nov. 30 Deadline
Lawmakers should consider adding reform measures to an NFIP extension, R.J. Lehmann, R Street director of finance, insurance and trade policy, told Best’s News Service.
Senate Banking Committee “Chairman Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, and committee Ranking Member Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, have legislation that would require communities subjected to repetitive flood losses to submit plans for mitigating those risks,” he said. “That is the sort of simple reform that has broad bipartisan support and no identifiable opposition that can and should be attached to this extension.”
Although it’s possible that Congress could pass an extension this week, it is more likely lawmakers will allow the program to expire and pass an extension along with a continuing resolution to fund the federal government, he said. The current stop-gap funding measure expires on Dec. 7.
