Craig Newmark Philanthropies continues support of R Street’s cybersecurity initiative: the #MakingSpace CyberBase
WASHINGTON (May 17, 2022) – Craig Newmark Philanthropies (CNP) recently announced new funding to continue support of the R Street Institute’s #MakingSpace initiative and the CyberBase. Both projects continue the partnership between R Street and #ShareTheMicInCyber to increase and support diversity in the cybersecurity, technology and national security fields, and to support CNP’s “cyber civil defense” efforts to protect the digital security of Americans and civic infrastructure.
“In the past few years, the increase in cybersecurity attacks and threats to our nation has made it clear how we need to work together collectively to protect ourselves and our democratic ideals. However, we need more participants to join our ‘cyber civil defense’ effort and with initiatives like #MakingSpace and CyberBase, we can increase cybersecurity career opportunities to meet the heightened threat landscape,” said Craig Newmark.
Craig Newmark Philanthropies has long supported ventures that elevate and further opportunities for underrepresented professionals in the technology sector with the aim of securing our networks from cyberattacks. The #MakingSpace initiative lies at the intersection of these issues. The initiative is led by cybersecurity expert Tatyana Bolton, director of R Street’s Cybersecurity & Emerging Threats department, in partnership with #ShareTheMicInCyber, a non-profit organization that addresses issues stemming from systemic racism in cybersecurity by highlighting the experiences of Black practitioners in this field and catalyzing conversations on race in the industry.
“We appreciate the continued support from Craig Newmark to bolster our support of the cyber civil defense effort. The significant increase will help R Street continue to build its platform and promote stronger cybersecurity workforce development and diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. Particularly as we are experiencing a 600,000 deficit in cybersecurity professionals and recognize the national security risk this poses,” said Bolton.
