However, the National Review’s Reihan Salam acknowledged that “There are Republicans who really regret how the Benghazi story has unfolded,” adding it was a foreign policy failure.

“The problem is that congressional Republicans, they wanted a scandal. They were chasing a scandal rather than making a real foreign policy argument,” Salam said.

“They’re still chasing a scandal,” Maher replied.

However, Salam said there was “politics on both sides” with the administration offering talking points and “a——covering” by the Sate Department and CIA. Salam, who said that Republicans too, “made the wrong call,” also thinks they “don’t want to undermine” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) because he is facing re-election.
