A bid to bar states from regulating AI is getting pushback
“On Wednesday, Republicans in a House subcommittee hearing on AI regulation presented a united front in favor of the provision.
The hearing wasn’t explicitly focused on the moratorium, which had already passed markup by the full committee. But it still took center stage as Republicans sought to defend it from Democrats’ criticism….
Among the experts who testified was Adam Thierer of the free-market think tank R Street Institute, who first proposed a “learning period” moratorium on AI regulations last year. He argued that it wouldn’t prevent states from addressing AI harms via laws that aren’t specific to the technology, such as broader civil rights and consumer protection laws.”
