It wasn’t the beginning, nor the end, of laments that the head of the Justice Department was using the federal law enforcement apparatus as a political tool of the president. In early May, Paul Rosenzweig, a Republican national security expert who once served as senior counsel prosecuting Bill Clinton’s impeachment, wrote that Barr’s actions were “enhancing the opportunity for authoritarian control. Which, I suppose, may very well be the ultimate objective of the entire exercise.”

Rosenzweig was referring to the criminal cases against Trump associates Michael Flynn and Roger Stone. On Wednesday, new developments in both cases contributed to the picture.
