Lars Powell is director of the Alabama Center for Insurance Information and Research at the University of Alabama and a senior fellow of the R Street Institute.

He previously held the Whitbeck-Beyer Chair of Insurance and Financial Services at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock from 2004 to 2014. Lars’ primary areas of research include insurer capitalization and the effects of regulation on insurance markets. He serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Insurance Regulation and his work has also appeared in the Journal of Financial Services Research, Journal of Law and Economics, Journal of Risk and Insurance, and the Risk Management and Insurance Review.

Lars is a member of the American Risk and Insurance Association and the Risk Theory Society. He received his bachelor’s in insurance and finance from the University of South Carolina and his doctorate in risk management and insurance from the University of Georgia. Prior to his academic career, he worked as an insurance agent and a medical malpractice claims adjuster.
