Cameron Smith is general counsel and vice president of implementation for the R Street Institute, where he oversees R Street’s efforts connecting our policy solutions with state and federal decision-makers and impacted constituencies. He also handles a wide range of the institute’s legal matters.
Cameron joined R Street in February 2015, having previously served as the Alabama Policy Institute’s vice president and general counsel. He also is a regular columnist for the AL.com.
Before moving to Alabama, Cameron served as counsel to U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Earlier, he was counsel to U.S. Rep. Tom Feeney, R-Fla., and to U.S. Rep. Geoff Davis, R-Ky. As a congressional staffer, he focused heavily on immigration policy, intellectual property issues and regulatory process reform.
Cameron earned his bachelor’s from Washington and Lee University and his juris doctor from the University of Alabama School of Law. Additionally, he serves as a member of the Alabama State Advisory Committee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights.
He lives in Birmingham, Alabama, with his wife, Justine, and three sons affectionately known as the Beast, Middle Beast and Little Beast.
