If conservatives and Republicans disagree with President Obama’s proposals to address climate change, they can always propose some of their own (“A climate demagogue,” June 30). Eli Lehrer of the conservative R Street Institute recently did so in the pages of the Weekly Standard, laying out the case for a carbon tax offset by cuts in corporate and personal income taxes. As Lehrer notes, “the carbon tax’s most prominent proponents include conservative economic thinkers like Art Laffer and American Enterprise Institute scholar Kevin Hassett. … Conservatives should care about global warming. And, just as liberals have done for almost 20 years, they should use the issue as a way to promote policies they already favor.”
