Event: Pentagon Purse Strings Episode 4: What’s Next in Afghanistan w/ Rep. Peter Meijer & Dr William Ruger
From R Street Institute:
Rep. Peter Meijer (R-Mich.) joined R Street’s Jonathan Bydlak and National Taxpayers Union’s (NTU) Andrew Lautz to discuss the future of America’s military presence in Afghanistan. Rep. Meijer, elected to the U.S. House in 2020, has emerged as an early leader in the freshman class of the 117th Congress, and will speak on his work to repeal the ’57, ’91 and ’02 authorizations of military force. Rep. Meijer serves on the Committees on Homeland Security and Foreign Affairs. He deployed to Iraq in 2010 as a non-commissioned officer, and ran advisory operations for a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Afghanistan in 2013.
After their discussion with Rep. Meijer, Dr. William Ruger of the Charles Koch Institute (CKI) will joined Bydlak and Lautz for a separate discussion about efforts to rethink the U.S. presence in Afghanistan. Dr. Ruger is a foreign policy thought leader, Navy veteran, scholar and former tenured professor. In September 2020, former President Donald Trump nominated him to be U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan.
