The report was released Wednesday by R Street, a free market think tank based in Washington, D.C. Although the short-term rental market is complicated and relatively new, the report attempts to give policymakers an idea of what to do and not to do as more cities dive into the issue.
“As traditional hotels ramp up their lobbying efforts to oppose the growth of short-term-rental services, it will be incumbent upon legislators to focus not on rules that protect dominant market players, but instead on addressing basic public-policy interests, like efficient tax collection and simple licensure,” the authors concluded.
