Minneapolis votes to uphold their police department
WASHINGTON (Nov. 3, 2021)—Following the vote to uphold the existence of the police department in Minneapolis, R Street’s Criminal Justice and Civil Liberties Director Jillian Snider released the following statement:
“Minneapolis’ vote against disbanding the city’s police department last night is a recognition by its citizens that local policing is necessary to enforce laws and protect law-abiding citizens. It also served as a reminder that the community believes other reforms are possible and necessary. The status quo can change.”
“But make no mistake: The fact this vote happened at all is a wake-up call to law enforcement across the country that communities want change. The residents they are charged with protecting are skeptical and stand ready to hold them accountable for abuses of power or ignoring their duty.”
“The good news is that many criminal justice reforms that could increase oversight and accountability in the criminal justice system, address inequalities in public safety and provide alternatives to arrest are on the table.”
“The citizens of Minneapolis provided a clear directive. Elected officials, law enforcement, local leaders and citizens must now work together to move forward on real, achievable reforms.”
