WASHINGTON (March 16, 2021)—The R Street Institute is excited to welcome Matt Germer as an elections fellow for the Governance Program. In this role, Germer will lead R Street’s efforts in support of expanding voting rights and non-partisan redistricting and in defense of fundamental free speech rights.

“I look forward to working with R Street’s growing governance team to make positive changes to our elections processes and security. In this time of unforeseen threats to our democracy, protecting our elections has never been more important,” said Germer.

R Street’s Director of the Governance Program Jonathan Bydlak said, “We are thrilled to welcome Germer to the team and to have him take the lead on growing our work on elections and free speech.”

Before joining R Street, Germer was a policy counsel and strategic planner coordinator at Washington State House of Representatives. Here he drafted legislation, developed policy proposals and offered strategic counsel on a variety of legislative matters, including elections, taxes, energy, criminal justice and technology. His prior experience also includes time in the Oregon State Legislature, where he served as administrator to the Senate Committee on Workforce. Germer ensured committee compliance with parliamentary procedure, composed briefs for legislative sponsors and interfaced with staff, advocates and the public.

Germer holds a J.D. from University of California, Irvine School of Law and a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles. He is currently a member of the Washington State Bar.
