R Street, a new free-market think tank located in Washington, D.C., is looking to hire an outreach director to coordinate its coalitions work on insurance, energy, environmental, entitlement reform and other issues.  The person’s primary job will be to build and manage coalitions with other right-of-center organizations. On a day-to-day basis, the outreach director will attend meetings, write op-eds, work on policy papers, meet with other conservative leaders, and spend some time talking with staff members on the Hill.

While party affiliation doesn’t matter, the person we hire must be a movement conservative. This means that he or she should be familiar with a wide range of other conservative organizations in D.C., actively participate in a wide spectrum of conservative events, and hold generally conservative views on most public policy issues. On the other hand, because R Street works closely with a variety of groups that aren’t conservative, any person we hire must be open-minded enough to work with groups that are moderate and/or liberal in their outlook.   An ideal candidate is a true “A performer”—a person with enormous energy, ability to meet tight deadlines, get great results, and follow vague directions from your boss.

This is a full-time job based in our Dupont Circle office (a really cool space that used to be an art gallery).  It will require some travel, although not a lot. Benefits include health and dental insurance (we pay 100% of health premiums), health club membership dues reimbursement, bike-sharing reimbursement, an employer-funded health reimbursement account to cover health insurance co-pays and deductibles, wages that are above average for this type of work, and eligibility for potentially large bonuses.  There is certainly a potential to make a six figure income during the first year on this job.

R Street doesn’t discriminate on the basis of age, sex, race, color, creed, national origin, taste in music, sexual orientation or any other factor that’s illegal, immoral, or stupid to use as a basis for hiring.

To apply, send us a resume, a cover letter, a writing sample (ideally one that has been published) and a list of references. References must include at least two known leaders of the conservative movement.  (We won’t check references until later in the process and will let you know before we do so.)

We intend to collect resumes and conduct screening phone interviews through Aug, 2o, 2012. We’ll conduct in-person interviews on Aug. 21 and 22 and extend a final offer no later than Aug. 23. We’d like someone to start during the month of September although exact start date is negotiable. We do want to be fair to every candidate who applies. If you haven’t heard from us within a week of your application and think you’re really well-qualified, please drop us an e-mail asking us to take another look.

Please send your application to [email protected].
